A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Katie and I am an apparel designer with a vibrant curiosity and prevalent ambition. I was fairly shy growing up, and struggled to connect with those around me. Eventually, I developed my creative voice through the self expression of clothing and my talents in sewing, crocheting/knitting, and jewelry making. Pursuing a career in design felt like a far away dream for me, until I learned about the design program at the University of Minnesota. There I found an uplifting community and inspiring friendships that have contributed to a sense of belonging and support as I find my purpose in the design industry.
At a young age I began to develop a sense of unachievable perfectionism. I’ve never been the student receiving straight A’s. This is something I hadn’t been able to accept until I was introduced to the discipline of apparel design. This is where I've found the courage to accept my critical tendencies and imaginative mind. I’ve seemed to always appreciate the undeniable power of that perfect pair of jeans, or a dress that seems to bear pure confidence. During junior year of high school, we were required to attend a job shadowing session of our choice. While this time in my life was quite testing and uncertain, I went on a whim to job shadow a designer and get a feel for a future career in fashion. This experience unexpectedly brought me the insight I was looking for on what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I no longer felt obligated to endure unfulfilling subject matter, and put unrealistic expectations upon myself as a result. From that day on, I took the idea of becoming an apparel designer and really just ran with it. Through the uncertainty, stress, and occasional discouragement, I’ve never been so passionate as I have been about designing. I am endlessly grateful for the experiences I have endured thus far, and am excited to see what the future holds.
